CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Low Hanging Fruit

While my sleep the night before was probably the worst one since arriving at the surface, I knew it would do no good to wallow. The morning had become fairly routine and once everyone was done, we all scattered. Unlike usual, I headed out west with my uncle, Ben, Alan, and Sam. They had a usual round of banter, but I mostly remained to the back of the group with Alan.

I didn’t blame Sam, but knowing him, he probably did. The drifting looks he gave me as we walked also highlighted that. I’d preempted that by letting my uncle know he was probably blaming himself for my introspective mood. So, when Dale saw the silent exchange between us, he stepped right in.

The rest of the fifteen minute walk to the pond and farm gave me the time to admire just how much work Samuel had done. Neat rows of tomatoes grew up split wood trellises, and various other veggies dotted the space around the tomatoes. Some short grass in the distance marked where the fence Sam and I made long ago separated the herd from our food supplies. The life-attuned had even cordoned off the different plants using stakes of wood and more of his vines. The scale dwarfed my own work and I couldn’t help but feel like I wasn’t actually contributing to our group. Even Daniela worked to become an offensive powerhouse all on her own. I was just the one taking the hits.

“Now, I will not be dealing with this issue on two sides,” my uncle said, halting our group right at the edge of the herd fence. “I get it, you two have stuff you want to get out. But I will not deal with self-deprecating nonsense and insecure friendships. We have taught you better than that.”

“But you don’t—” I started to say before Dale tut-tut-tutted at me. He even did the little finger shake in my face.

“We. Taught. You. Better. You are all equal, and so long as you are trying your best and not forcing your ideas on others, the blame is not squarely on your shoulders. I don’t know the full picture, but what happened to Daniela was not your fault, Ron. And even if I don’t know what you’ve been up to in that room, I know that you’ve contributed immensely to our group.”

“How did you even know I was thinking that?” I asked, mouth hanging open in surprise.

“Ronan, it really doesn’t take a genius,” Ben said, making a point of gesturing to Alan, “to see how your expression fell the more you saw of the farm.”

“How does anything I make compare to this? To feeding us and even the people down below. He didn’t even need me to set up his own fencing.” I pointed with indignation at the simple, but sturdy, barriers all around us.

“Ron, why do you think I’ve been able to focus so much on all of this?” Sam asked, tilting his head.

“Because you are actually super capable and have magic powers over plant growth?” I shot back.
